Melvin Dale Hugen was born in Pella, Iowa in 1931. Hugen attended Calvin College as an undergraduate. During his time at Calvin, he was involved in the notorious prank involving a Model-T in the lobby of the Administration Building. He graduated Calvin in 1953 and entered Calvin Seminary, graduating in 1956. Hugen also earned his Th.D. through de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
In 1959 Hugen became a home missionary and pastor of Richton Park Chapel in Chicago, Illinois. During this time Hugen also attended University of Chicago from 1959-1961. Hugen went on to serve the congregation of Eastern Avenue in Grand Rapids, Michigan (1962) as well as a missionary and service pastor in Honolulu, Hawaii (1967). In 1970, Hugen became faculty at his alma mater, Calvin Seminary, as Professor of Pastoral Care. He served Calvin Seminary until his retirement in 1998.
