Abstract
Teacher at Rehoboth, nurse at Rehoboth Mission Hospital. The collection consists of a ninety-eight page photograph album with an incomplete identification list of the photographs.
Biographical Note
Alice Venhuizen was born on June 3, 1906 in Granum, Alberta, Canada. The Venhuizen family immigrated to the United States and settled in Bozeman, Montana. After she graduated from high school, Venhuizen taught school for six years. Venhuizen was very passionate about becoming a nurse, however she accepted the call from Rehoboth, New Mexico to become a teacher in the southwest. She was the first teacher in the District School, a school for non-Native American children. After six years of teaching in Rehoboth, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She took her nursing training in Chicago. Venhuizen returned to New Mexico to serve at the Rehoboth Mission Hospital in 1935 and remained there until 1943. In 1945 she married John Peterson. On April 8, 1996 Venhuizen passed away in Kent County, Michigan.
