Vanden Heuvel enrolled at Calvin Theological Seminary and graduated in 1890.

His first charge was in Zutphen, Michigan in the same year of his graduation. He went on to serve several other congregations including: Dispatch, Kansas (1892-1895); West Side, Cleveland, Ohio (1895-1902); Hospers, Iowa (1902-1904); Rochester, New York (1904-1907).

In 1907 he joined the North Side Church in Passaic, New Jersey as their minister. By 1912 a disagreement which led to court and the removal of Vanden Heuvel's license to preach by the mother church occurred. In 1922 Rev. Vanden Heuvel retired from active ministry.
