Abstract

Professor of classics at Calvin College. The collection includes articles, reprints, correspondence, schedules, programs, clippings, two manuals for the study of ancient history of Greece and Rome, and printed pictures relating to Queen Juliana's visit to Western Michigan and Calvin College in 1952.

Biographical Note

William T. Radius was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 22, 1906. Radius enrolled at Calvin College in 1924 and earned his bachelor's degree in liberal arts in 1928.  During his time at Calvin, Radius met his wife-to-be, Marianne Vos.  After graduation they moved to Iowa where they taught at Grundy College. Later they moved to Paterson, New Jersey where he taught at Eastern Academy. In 1933 Radius returned to Calvin College, not as a student, but as a professor of Classical Languages.

Radius had also furthered his education by studying at University of Chicago and Columbia University and eventually earning his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1943. Radius continued to serve Calvin College for 43 years. Over the years he taught Greek, Latin, ancient history, and ancient philosophy.

Radius was an avid writer. He wrote articles for the Calvin Forum and The Banner.  He also authored a book in Latin about Latin Church fathers titled, Selections from Lactantius: Divinae Institutiones. The Radiuses also received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1982. On November 12, 1989, William T. Radius passed away at the age of 83.
