Abstract
The collection focusses on Clifton J. Orlebeek's (1926- ) teaching western philosophy in China and studying Asian philosophy during the 1980s and 1990s. Details his experiences in China as well as the status of the study of Asian philosophy at the end of the twentieth century.
Biographical Note
Clifton J. Orlebeke was born 17 November 1926 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Joe and Wilhelmina (Plekker) Orlebeek. He graduated from Calvin College and the University of Michigan in Electrical Engineering, but switched to philosophy and received his PHD from Harvard University in 1963.He was on the faculty of the Philosophy Department at Calvin College, 1957-1992. The author of many articles and reviews, je served as the editor of Christian Scholar's Review, 1978-1985. He focused on ancient philosophy and the philosophy of science and taught Asian philosophy and artificial intelligence in addition to western philosophy.
He and his wife Barbara Joyce (1928-2016) had four children: Kathy, Tim, Susan, and Rebecca.
