Fortuin, Karl Wilhelm (1883-1960) | Heritage Hall, Hekman Library

Karel Wilhelm Fortuin was born in Heeg, Friesland, Netherlands on June 23, 1883.  In 1897 he immigrated to the United States. He attended Calvin Theological Seminary where he earned his diploma in 1911. He was ordained on November 26, 1911. He went on to serve the following churches, Harderwyk, MI (1911-14); Hope Ave., Passaic, NJ (1914-22); Borculo, MI (1922-28); South Holland, IL (1928-33); Alto, WI (1933-37). The last few years of ministry were tumultuous for Rev. Fortuin which eventually led to his deposition.  In the Acts of Synod, 1939 it was noted that he was guilty of breaking the ninth commandment and considered of weak character, unfit for ministry. Nonetheless, he was also remembered for his striking and vigorous style of preaching.  After his deposition he entered a non-ministerial vocation.

Despite his deposition, Fortuin continued to be a faithful member of the Grace Christian Reformed Church. He passed away on December 10, 1960 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hermina Weys. He was survived by his son and daughter.
