Broene, Geert (1838-1919) | Heritage Hall, Hekman Library

Name: Broene, Geert (1838-1919)

Historical Note:

Geert Broene was born in Hocklingkamp, Hanover, Germany on September 16, 1838. Son of a farmer, Broene grew up tending to his father's cattle and sheep.  Even at a young age, Broene knew he did not want to became a farmer, but rather a minister. At the age of 24, Broene attempted to become a student of ministry, however he was not accepted. He concluded that ministry as a profession was not in God's plans for him.

In 1865 he immigrated to the United States. Like his father, Broene became a farmer. He also got married to Andina Harmsen. At the age of 34, Broene still felt the calling to pursue ministry. Despite many obstacles, Broene became a student of ministry, and studied at Calvin Theological Seminary.  He earned his diploma in 1877, and began his first charge in Noordelloos, Michigan. His other charges include First Roseland, Chicago, IL (1879-1884); Zutphen, MI (1884-1889); and West Leonard, Grand Rapids, MI (1889-1904).

In 1904 Rev. Broene retired. As an emeritus pastor, Broene continued to spread God's word and preach. On April 4, 1919 Rev. Geert Broene passed away in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
