Son of Arthur and Marian Bowie Armour, David Arthur Armour was born 1937 in Grove City, Pennsylvania. He attended Calvin College, graduating in 1959. He received his Masters and Ph.D. in History at Northwestern University. Armour moved to Milwaukee, WI where he became faculty at the University of Wisconsin for 4 years.
Armour returned to Michigan as he was hired by the Mackinac Island State Historic Parks Commission to be the Deputy Director. He held the position for 36 years as well as Acting Director 2 times. He and his family resided on Mackinac Island, MI for the Spring/Summer seasons, while living in Lansing, MI for the remainder of the year. He was involved in Hmong Christian Ministry at Grand Ledge and Lansing. He was an elder at River Terrace Church in East Lansing and later at Covenant CRC in Grand Ledge, MI. Trinity Episcopal Church was the Armour family church while living on Mackinac Island.
Armour was greatly involved in historic building restoration. He restored 40+ historic buildings and consulted on numerous projects as well. He was Editor of Historical Archaeology for 4 years. He also was a prolific writer as well, author of numerous articles and book reviews. He also wrote 7 books, 3 of which were award winning. Armour did not let his 2003 retirement slow him down. With his wife Grace, they moved back to Grove City in 2004. He taught classes at Grove City College and was named Adjunct Professor in 2007.
A life filled with numerous awards, honors, and achievements, David A. Armour passed away on April 28, 2010 from cancer. He was married to Grace for over 50 years with 4 children and 7 grandchildren: Marian Armour-Gemmen and Randall, Angelyn and Ellena; Arthur Armour and Rebecca Lew, Samuel and John; David Armour and Joanna Tong, David, Keith and Michael; Anneke Myers and Matthew.
