Biographical Note

Albert E. Broene was born in Saugatuck, Michigan in 1876, and grew up in the Drenthe area.  He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1897. He furthered his education at the University of Michigan, and then at Calvin Seminary. He graduated from the Seminary in 1903.  Also in 1903 Broene was appointed to fill the vacancy of Rev. B. K. Kuiper in the Literary Department. During his 49 years at Calvin, Professor Broene taught a variety of classes. He primarily taught French and German, however he often would extend himself to teach courses of general history, Bible, and natural sciences. In 1913 Professor Broene took a brief leave of absence to participate in graduate studies at the University of Heidelberg.

Even though Broene was a Seminary graduate, he was never ordained, however many churches of the area demanded his services. Although he was busy with lecturing and assisting churches, he was known as a family man. He married a former student, Ann Franken, and together they had four children.

After many years of service, Professor Broene officially retired from Calvin College in 1946. However, due to a surge in post-war college enrollment, Professor Broene continued to teach until 1952. On October 18, 1967 Professor Broene was attending a prayer service at Neland Avenue CRC when he fell and was taken to the hospital. He passed away an hour and half later.  He was remembered for his understated sense of humor and strong Christian faith.
