Professor of education at Calvin College. The collection includes research notes; education course material; class notes; publications; correspondence; education department materials; critiques; Christian Schools International materials; master's thesis regarding Abraham Kuyper; doctoral dissertation detailing educational philosophy for the Christian Reformed Church; and materials regarding grandfather, Nicholaas Hendrik Beversluis (1850-1931).

Biographical Note

Nicholas Henry Beversluis was born in Paterson, New Jersey, on 10 June 1915.

Nicholas married Gertrude Van Hoff. He graduated from Calvin College in 1939. Nicholas became a pastor in the Christian Reformed Church in 1944. He had graduated from Western Theological Seminary in 1943 and from Columbia University in 1963. Together he and his wife had five children: Eric Henry, Gerda Tanet, Joel Diederik, Adrian Nicholas, and Marcus Gideon. Claudia Beversluis is his daughter-in-law and his granddaughters are Celia Lenger and Claire Beversluis. Carol Honderd, the wife of Professor Ralph Honderd, is his niece.

Nicholas held many different jobs-he served as a chaplain in the US Army in 1944 and in 1947 he was a Bible teacher at Grand Rapids Christian High School. In 1948 he served as the Bible teacher and principal of Eastern Christian High School; in 1959 he was the Bible instructor at Calvin College; in 1960 he was the principal of Eastern Christian High School; and in 1966 he was an associate professor of education at Calvin College. Beversluis retired in 1980 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and died 22 January 1998.
