Collection Historical Note

John L. Ubels was born in Modesto, California on June 9, 1952. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Calvin College, a Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in animal physiology from Michigan State University. He later taught biology at Calvin College from 1995 to 2016.

Dr. Ubels taught human physiology and cell physiology during his time at Calvin University. He led an interim sailing course in Florida and an eye care service-learning interim course in Tijuana, Mexico. During his years at Calvin, he mentored 56 students in his research lab. He did extensive research for Alcon Research, Ltd. on ophthalmology, particularly dry eyes treatments.  He did extensive testing for the development of Systane and Artificial Tears.  Over the past 44 years, he has published 104 papers and chapters on every part of the eye of fish, amphibians and mammals, including humans.
