Abstract

Professor of physics at Calvin College. The collection includes: correspondence with A. R. Hellworth of the University of Michigan concerning the engineering program at Calvin College, and a physics laboratory manual.

Biographical Note

Harry J. Wassink was born on May 7, 1897 in Holland, Michigan. Wassink attended Calvin Preparatory School and then spent a year at Hope College. He transferred to Calvin College, graduating in 1925. Wassink began to work for the International Harvester Company in 1929 as a design engineer.

In 1931 he accepted a faculty position at Calvin College. Wassink became professor of physics and engineering. Initially Wassink taught most of the subjects in the department of Physics and Engineering. With the help of Professor Wassink, engineering eventually was made into its own separate department. He even helped plan the new science building on the Knollcrest campus. Professor Wassink was also active in many scientific societies such as the American Society of Physics Teachers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Scientific Affiliation.

After retiring in 1965, Professor Wassink was able to devote time to his blueberry farm in Holland, Michigan. From 1939 to 1943 Wassink served as an elder at the Sherman Street Christian Reformed Church. He later joined Calvin CRC and then joined Bethany CRC. Harry J. Wassink passed away on February 6, 1983 in Holland, Michigan. His wife, Cornelia née Blauw preceded him in death in 1982.
