Abstract

Minister of the Christian Reformed Church. Travel account undertaken by the Seminary Quartet in 1930; Hiram Vander Kley, Cornelius Schoolland, John Kenbeek, and John Holwerda. The scrapbook includes reactions to the program given as well as an account of the travels by car from Michigan through Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, California, Washington, Montana, and South Dakota. Handwritten report by John J. Holwerda.

Biographical Note

Son of Rev. James Holwerda, John J. Holwerda was born on August 278, 1896.  Like his father before him, John attended Calvin Seminary and graduated in 1925. In the same year, Holwerda married Jennie Roetman as well as accepted the call to serve the congregation of Highland, Michigan.

During his ministry career, Holwerda served the congregations of Randolph, Wisconsin (1931); Newton, New Jersey (1948); and Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada (1956).  When he was not preaching, Holwerda wrote articles for the Banner and De Watcher. He also served twice as a delegate to the synod. Holwerda retired in 1961.  Holwerda moved to Bellflower, California where he continued to serve and assist surrounding churches. After a major operation, Holwerda passed away on May 3, 1975 in Bellflower. He was survived by his wife and their four children: Harriet, Donald, John, and Gay.
