Abstract

The collection is made up of letters between John Lagerwey and his family. The letters include discussions of family life. They are noteworthy for their discussion of Lagerwey’s evolving religious views of his experiences and work in graduate school and as a scholar of Chinese cultural and religious traditions.

Biographical Note

John Lagerwey was born in 1946 in Grand Rapids. His parents were Walter Lagerwey and Wilhelmina (Wilma) Ditmar Lagerwey. His father was professor of Dutch at Calvin college from 1953 to 1983. Lagerwey studied at Calvin College, graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in English Language and Literature in 1968, and earned a Ph.D. in Chinese studies at Harvard University in 1975.
