Abstract

Minister of the Christian Reformed Church. Papers include call letters from seven churches, evangelism letters, and sermons.

Biographical Note

Hiram Vander Klay was born on November 21, 1904 in Spring Lake, Michigan.  Vander Klay attended Calvin College earning his B.A. in 1928. He went on to Calvin Theological Seminary where he earned his B.D. in 1932. Also in 1932 he married Grace Flokstra.

Vander Klay's first charge was in Vesper, WI in 1932. He served the congregation until 1940. Vander Klay's other charges include Hancock, MN, 1940-1944; Goshen, IN, 1944-1949; Leighton, IA, 1949-1952; Owen Sound, ON, 1952-1961; West Sayville, NY, 1961-1967; and Ferrisburg, VT, 1967-1971. In 1971 Rev. Vander Klay retired from active ministry.  On June 19, 1991 Hiram Vander Klay died from a stroke.

Rev. Vander Klay was known for his compassion. He enjoyed providing consolation to the sick and the elderly. He is also known for helping Dutch immigrants in Canada during World War II. He assisted the Dutch immigrants adjust to their new home land by preaching to them and helping them organize into congregations.  His other involvements include serving on the Elim Christian School Board in the late 1950s and serving as a delegate to the Synod.
