Abstract
Minister of the Christian Reformed Church; professor of German, Greek, and New Testament at Grundy College, Iowa (1916-1922); and professor of church history at Calvin Seminary (1928-1947). The collection includes a paper entitled "The Christian Reformed Church, its Heritage, its Origins, its History"; a paper prepared for the Calvinistic Study Club entitled "The Christian Philosophy of History"; a paper submitted to the Synod of the Christian Reformed Church entitled "The Millennium"; notes entitled "Notulen van de Commissie of the Christian Reformed Church" concerning the teachings of Ralph Janssen; letters of acceptance of a call to the Christian Reformed Church in Lafayette, Indiana; translation of articles in Gereformeerde Amerikaan; and church history outlines.
Biographical Note
Diedrich Hinrich Kromminga was in Oldersum, Ostfriesdland, Germany on October 20, 1879. Kromminga and his family immigrated to the United States in 1891 and settled in Iowa. In the spring of 1893, Kromminga made his confession of faith and made the decision to become a minister. He studied at Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. In 1899, he enrolled at Calvin Theological Seminary and later took post-graduate courses in theology at Princeton Seminary.
Kromminga went on to become a home missionary for Classis Ostfriestland in 1907. In 1908, he was called to serve the congregation of Bunde, Minnesota. He also served congregations in Lafayette, Indiana (1911-1914), and Ackley, Iowa (1914-1916). In 1916, Kromminga shifted his career path temporarily to become a professor at Grundy Center College in Iowa. He served the college until 1922 where he resumed his ministry work in Peoria, Iowa. He also served the church of Neland Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 1926 to 1928.
In 1928, Kromminga accepted a faculty position at Calvin Seminary. He was appointed professor of church history. He served Calvin Seminary until his death on 19 May 1947. His wife, Katherine (Van Looten), and four children survived him.
