Herman Kuiper was born in the Netherlands, December 18, 1889, the youngest of the eight children of Rev. Klaas Kuiper. When he was very young, his family moved to the United States, to the Chicago area.
After graduating from our seminary in 1913, he attended Princeton Theological Seminary for two years. Interrupting his studies there because of World War I, he entered the ministry serving in the Rock Valley, Iowa, church and in Oakdale Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan, until 1925. Then a three-year leave of absence enabled him to get his doctoral degree at the Free University. His ministry then took him to Fourth Roseland, Chicago, Illinois; Rock Valley for a second time; and Second Redlands, California. In 1952, Dr. Kuiper was appointed as professor of systematic theology at Calvin Seminary, serving until his retirement in 1958. Herman Kuiper passed away due to a ruptured aorta on January 13, 1963 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was survived by his wife of 48 years.
The collection of his sermons and articles shows him to be a careful exegeter of God’s Word, and a sensitive pastor of God’s people.
