Abstract

The collection includes personal copybook written by Dirk Vanden Heuvel, a farmer in Genderen, Noord Brabant (a descendant settled in the Pella, Iowa area); and a genealogy of the Pieter Rus family (1981).

Biographical Note

John W. Kuipers graduated from Calvin College with a B.A. in Chemistry and Mathematics in 1934. He went on to earn his M.S. at the University of Michigan in 1936. He had additional graduate studies at MIT in the summers of 1968 and 1969.  He had worked at QEI, Incorporated as Scientific Staff and MITRE, Corporation as Consultant in Bedford, Massachusetts.  He served as Chief of the Division of the Office Research and Development at Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1964-1973; Director of the Information Sciences Laboratory of the Research Division at Itek Corporation from 1958 to 1964; various positions at Eastman Kodak Company from 1936 to 1958.

Kuipers was also involved with a number of societies such as the American Documentation Institute (nominated for President in 1955 and 1965), Association for Computing Machinery, Association for Computational Linguistics, and American Society for Information Sciences. He served on several committees as well such as American Chemical Society, Department of Defense, and U.S. Intelligence Board to name just a few. He has also authored and co-authored a number of publications.
