Minister of the Christian Reformed Church. The collection includes thirteen beroepingsbrieven and call letters to churches in Volga, South Dakota; Oskaloosa, Iowa; Bauer, Michigan; Plainfield, Michigan; Spring Lake, Michigan; West Branch, Michigan; Noordeloos, Michigan; Oaklawn, Illinois; McBain, Michigan; Reeman, Michigan; Hull, North Dakota; and two from Ellsworth, Michigan.

Herman Goodyke was born in Sexbierum, Friesland, Netherlands on March 9, 1884. At the age of 5, Goodyke and his parent immigrated to the United States, settling in Michigan. He spent the early years of his life on a farm in Borculo, Michigan. Goodyke felt like ministry was his true calling in life. However, he was already 25 years old and without even a high school diploma. He knew he had many obstacles ahead of him, but was determined to pursue an education in ministry.  Finally, at the age of 33, Goodyke graduated from Calvin Theological Seminary in 1918.

In 1918 Goodyke accepted his first charge in McBain, Michigan. He served the McBain Congregation until 1922. Rev. Goodyke's other charges include Reeman, Michigan (1922-45) and Atwood, Michigan (1945-53). In 1953 Rev. Goodyke retired from active ministry.

Throughout Rev. Goodyke's life, he faced many physical ailments. During his early adulthood he developed an unnamed skin condition. This skin affliction was irritating and painful, often leaving his skin raw. Later in his life, he developed arthritis which prevented him in a physical capacity. He was no longer able to visit with the sick, elderly, and shut-ins which he very much cherished. Also he suffered from a gradual loss of eyesight, which made it impossible for him to read. However, his faithful wife, Gertrude Van Noord, would often read to him and kept him up-to-date on current religious and worldly news. Despite all of his hardships, he was known for his cheerful and patient demeanor. On November 11, 1959 Rev. Herman Goodyke passed away due to cancer. He was survived by his wife, and their two children.
