Abstract

Associate professor of history at Florida State University. The collection includes a book entitled Overisel, Michigan: An American Immigrant Community in the Late Nineteenth Century; a thesis, "Dutch Immigrant Women in the Late Nineteenth Century, a Comparative Analysis," submitted to the Kent State University for the degree of master of arts, 1983; an article in American Studies, "Give Us This Day: Dutch Immigrant Women in Two Protestant Denominations, 1880-1920;" a paper on gender roles in Dutch-American immigrant households; and her PhD dissertation, "Home is where you build it: Dutch immigrant women in the United States, 1880-1920."

Biographical Note

Suzanne M. Sinke earned her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.  Before becoming associate professor of history at Florida State University in 2002, she taught at Clemson University and briefly as a Fulbright professor at the University of Tampere in Finland.  Since 2013 Dr. Sinke serves as the Director of Graduate Studies in the History Department. Her specialty is in migration and gender studies and is currently researching marriage and international migration in U.S. history.

Sinke is also a prolific writer, she has published the book, Dutch Immigrant Women in the United States, 1880-1920 in 2002. She has also written for International Migration Review, OAH Magazine, Gender Issues, Journal of American Ethnic History, and Immigrants and Minorities. She has served as book review editor for the Journal of American Ethnic History. Sinke has been involved in many organizations such as being the co-chair for the AP U.S. History Curriculum Development Advisory Committee and president of the Association for the Advancement of Dutch American Studies. In 2013 Sinke received her second Fulbright scholarship to teach at the University of Salzburg in Austria.
