Biographical Note
Jan (John) H. Boer was born in Lutjegast, the Netherlands in 1938. Boer and his family immigrated to British Columbia, Canada in 1951. Boer became a student at Calvin College, graduating in 1962. He went on to Calvin Theological Seminary where he earned his BD in 1965. While pursuing his higher education, visiting lecturers influenced him to pursue missionary work in Africa. After a year of taking African studies at Michigan State University, Boer travelled to Nigeria and became a church developer. In 1979, Boer earned his ThD from the Free Reformed University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. From 1977-1993, Boer served as Director then Consultant at the Institute of Church & Society in Jos, Nigeria. He continued to lecture in Jos, Nigeria until 1996 when he returned to North America to work as a free-lance researcher and writer on Christian-Muslim issues.
