Veltman, Nelson Lantinga (1912-1989) | Heritage Hall, Hekman Library
Nelson was born in Eastmanville, MI, September 1, 1912. When in his teens he was a member of the Alpine Avenue Christian Reformed Church. During the ministry of Dr. Wm. Masselink Calvin College and Calvin Seminary students of Alpine were recruited by Masselink for the educational and mission programs. Nelson was no exception. He and his classmate, Marinus Goote, served as catechism teachers and brought messages at the Sparta Mission Station. These were practical learning experiences.
After graduation from the Seminary in 1938, Nelson served in Prairie City, IA, 1938; Drenthe, MI, 1943; Whitinsville, MA, 1947; Boston Square, Grand Rapids, MI, 1962; Third Kalamazoo, MI 1967; and Walnut Creek, CA, 1973. After retirement in 1977, Veltman served as Associate Pastor in First Zeeland until on July 6, 1989, when he suffered a massive heart attack and passed away.
During his active ministry, he was a member of denominational boards; Home Missions (President) and Board of Publications (President). He was active in the Grand Rapids Christian Quidance Bureau and the Reformed Bible College Board. Nine times he represented his classis at Synod.
Lois and Nelson celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1988, a year before Nelson died.
