Historical Note:

The second of seven children, and only son, of Henry and Tryntje (also Tena; née de Haan) Hoogendoorn, Case was born in 1943, in Vinkeveen, Utrecht, the Netherlands.  The family immigrated to the Pella area of Iowa in 1948, where they farmed, as they had done in the Netherlands.  Hoogendoorn graduated from Calvin College, BA, 1966, and from the University of Chicago Law School with a J.D. in 1969.  He began practicing law in Chicago with Kirkland, Ellis, Hodson, Chaffetz & Masters (later Kirkland & Ellis LLP), his specialty became estate, tax, financial, and family business planning.  He was a partner in the firm, 1975-1985. In 1985 Hoogendoorn and Earl Talbot formed their own firm, Hoogendoorn and Talbot LLP, "focused on the legal needs of individuals and families, business entities, and charitable, faith-based, and not-for-profit organizations."

On 6 August 1966 Hoogendoorn and Patricia Jean Kuntz were married in Pella, Iowa.  She is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and a special education teacher.  They have three children.  Melissa J. Hoogendoorn De Vries (Calvin College, BA, 1991; University of Illinois-Champaign Urban, JD, 1994) is a partner with Hoogendoorn and Talbot; Lisa M. Hoogendoorn-Daniel (Calvin College, BA, 1993) is a freelance architect in Denver; and Justin H. (Calvin College, BA, 1995; University of Chicago Booth School of Business, MBA, 2002) is a chartered financial analyst in the Chicago area.
