Bavinck, Herman (1854-1921) | Heritage Hall, Hekman Library

Name: Bavinck, Herman (1854-1921)

Historical Note: Bavinck was born 13 December 1854 in the town of Hoogeveen in the Netherlands. Known as a Dutch Reformed theologian, he gained his theological training at Kampen and Leiden. He graduated in 1880 from Leiden completing a dissertation on Ulrich Zwingli. In 1902 he became Professor of Theology at the Free University in Amsterdam, succeeding Abraham Kuyper. In many other ways he followed Kuyper. He gave the Stone Lectures at Princeton in 1908, and joined the Netherlands Parliament in 1911. Though at times following a similar path, Bavinck's biographer, J. H. Landwehr, indicated that the two were very different. This came out most clearly in how the two conceived of common grace.
