Collection Overview
Abstract
Real estate agent, and politician, active in municipal affairs in Lake County and Highland, Indiana. The collection includes campaign material; election documents; correspondence; newspaper clippings; and also details the Dutch immigrant community south of Chicago, Illinois; the agricultural pursuit of some of those immigrants in northern Indiana; plus the minutes of the Farmers' Cooperative Association (Highland, Indiana); and information on a short-lived Dutch immigrant settlement in Kuner, Colorado.
Biographical Note
Bartel Zandstra Jr. was a real estate agent, local politician, and municipal official in the Highland, Indiana, area.
The son (one of sixteen children) of a truck farmer who had immigrated from the Netherlands, Zandstra married Gwendolyn Mae Jonkman. They had two children, Bartel Jay and Anne Kathie (Stoll). He served in the United States Army, 1943-1946, in the European theater.
