Collection Overview
Abstract
Dutch American Historical Commission members are Calvin College, Calvin Theological Seminary, Hope College, Western Theological Seminary, and the Joint Archives of Holland, Michigan. The representatives meet twice each year to share colonial archival information, acquisitions, and projects from their institutions and to confer on joint projects. The collection includes minutes, reports, correspondence, notes, research materials, and workshop materials.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Dutch American Historical Commission collection includes minutes, reports, correspondence, notes, research material, workshop materials, and publication materials. The materials in this collection give insight into the projects of the individual member institutions as well as the process of joint projects such as workshops and publications.
A notable part of the collection are the papers on the translation of Johannes Stellingwerff’s book, Amsterdamse Emigraten, which contained a series of reciprocal letters between Amsterdam and settlements in Iowa. These papers include notes and correspondence on the publishing contract, fundraising process, and translation process of what would be published as, Iowa Letters.
Collection Historical Note
The Dutch American Historical Commission (DAHC) is made up of representatives from Calvin University, Calvin Theological Seminary, Holland Museum, Hope College, Western Theological Seminary. The organization formed in 1963 with a goal to report on institutional projects and collaborate on joint projects to archive and produce publications about Dutch American history.
