Abstract

Rev. John Henry Stek (1925 – 2009) was a pastor, bible scholar and translator, and professor of Old Testament Studies at Calvin Theological Seminary who was instrumental in the creation of the New Living Version (NIV) of the bible. This collection contains Stek’s teaching notes on the Old Testament as well as articles, correspondence, and sermons about the bible, catechism, and teaching.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The John Henry Stek Papers include course materials (including syllabi, bibliographies, and lecture notes), correspondence, papers, articles, and sermons. Topics include the bible and biblical studies, theology, the Heidelberg catechism, as well as the institutions of Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary.

This collection is notable in that it provides evidence of Stek’s thoughts and teachings on scriptures. It also gives insight into the educational pedagogy of Calvin University and Seminary in the 1950s and 60s, notably on the subject of Genesis and creation versus evolution.

The collection also includes articles written by Stek about the New Living Version (NIV) translation of the bible but does not include institutional material on the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) or unpublished notes on its creation.
