Collection Overview
Abstract
Dean of the College of Arts and Science of the University of Alabama, and professor of philosophy at Tulane University. The collection includes: articles and translations of articles published in the Nieuwe Rotterdamse Courant, June 1963, dealing with aspects of American life; translations of poems by Antoon Coolen; correspondence; and a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, addresses, programs, and newspaper pictures relating to ten Hoor's academic career.
Biographical Note
Marten Ten Hoor was born on April 21, 1890 in Franeker, Netherlands. In 1896 the Ten Hoor family immigrated to the United States. Ten Hoor attended Calvin College, graduating in 1909. From 1909 to 1911, Ten Hoor worked as a private tutor. In 1918 Ten Hoor became an American citizen as well as entered the U.S. Army to serve in WWI. In 1920 Ten Hoor married Marie Magdalen Schanz. With the short break of military service, Ten Hoor had taught at several universities such as Michigan, Illinois, and Tulane from 1911 to 1944.
In 1944, Ten Hoor accepted the positions of professor of philosophy and dean of College of Arts and Science at the University of Alabama. He would serve the university until his retirement in 1960. Ten Hoor also was a member of the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies where he served as a chairman and on the board of directors. Over the course of his career, Ten Hoor had written a number of publications such as The Problems of Thinking and Knowing, 1933 and The Role of Music in Culture, 1961. In 1963 Ten Hoor received the honor of a building named after him on the University of Alabama's campus called Ten Hoor Hall. On October 10, 1967 Marten Ten Hoor passed away.
