Nicholas Roorda (1924-1982) | Heritage Hall, Hekman Library

Name: Nicholas Roorda (1924-1982)

Historical Note:

Nicholas Roorda was born on August 24, 1924, in Weed, California, and grew up in Duvall, Washington. The leadership of his father and the piety of his mother influenced him in serving as a deacon and treasurer of the small congregation in Duvall. When he heeded the call to the ministry, he left the farm and entered Calvin College and Seminary.

Most of Nicholas’s time in the ministry was spent in Minnesota where he served in Hancock (1961-1965), Pipestone (1965-1974), and Mountain Lake (1974-1979) Christian Reformed Churches. His final tour of duty was at the Charlotte, Michigan, Christian Reformed Church. His death came on July 19, 1982, after a period of hospital care for a heart ailment. His wife, Wilma (Van Drunen), 3 daughters and 2 sons, survived him.

Nick was always seeking avenues for evangelistic activity. In Pipestone, he conducted drive-in services for tourists during the summer months. His last charge was served as a missionary preacher.
