Historical Note: Klaas Schoolland was born in Ureterp, Friesland, the Netherlands on February 17, 1851.  He studied at Kampen and then enrolled at the University of Groningen.  In 1892 Schoolland immigrated to the United States and settled in Maxwell City, New Mexico, however he soon found his way to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  While in Grand Rapids he met his bride-to-be, J. De Witte. Together they had four children. In 1894 there became a vacancy due to the death of Gerrit Berkof at the Calvin Theological Seminary. The Seminary appointed Schoolland to join their faculty. For the next 28 years Schoolland taught Dutch, Greek, and Latin at the Seminary. In 1938 Klaas Schoolland passed away.
