Nagel Family (1862-1929) | Heritage Hall, Hekman Library

Name: Nagel Family (1862-1929)

Historical Note: Son of Hendrick Nagel, Barend Nagel was born on June 7, 1862 in De Leek of the province of Groningen, Netherlands. In 1885 he and his family immigrated to the United States, settling in New Holland, South Dakota. Soon after they immigrated Hendrick Nagel passed away. Due to these circumstances and his confession of faith as a young boy, Nagel felt the call to pursue a career in ministry. After his mother's death, he moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan and enrolled at Calvin Theological Seminary. Once he graduated in 1903, he married Jennie Ensing, and he accepted the call from East Side, Cleveland, Ohio. Rev. Nagel also went on to serve the congregations of Ebenezer, South Dakota (1906-1908); Wright, Iowa (1908-1914); West Harlem, Michigan (1914-1920) and lastly Chandler, Minnesota. He remained at Chandler until his death on October 25, 1929.
