Name: Hulst, John (1872-1955)


Historical Note: John Hulst was son of Rev. L. J. Hulst and was born in Stads Kanaal, Groningen, the Netherlands in 1872. At the age of 2, him and his family immigrated to the United States. Hulst attended public school in Grand Rapids, and went to college at Stanford University and the University of Michigan. He graduated as mechanical engineer in 1895 and began working for Ohio Steel Co. as a draftsman. In 1916 Hulst worked as assistant to the Vice President of United States Steel in New York. By 1926 Hulst was promoted to Vice President. In 1938 the SS John Hulst, a 13,000-ton ore vessel, was launched by  the steel corporation in Detroit.  In 1942 Hulst retired and moved to a farm near Nuncia. He was a member of the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Iron and Steel Institute.  At the age of 83, John Hulst passed in 1955.
