John B. Schoolland was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 11, 1894. He received his bachelor's degree from Calvin College and went on to earn this master's degree from Columbia University and Ph.D. from Duke University. Schoolland also served during World War I in field artillery. After the war he began to teach in Bowling Green, Ohio and Paterson, New Jersey. While in Paterson, Schoolland married Wilma D. "Bree" Vermeulen in 1921. They eventually moved back his hometown of Grand Rapids where he became the principal of the Christian High School.
In 1929 he accepted a faculty position at University of Colorado in Boulder. He served the university as professor of psychology until his retirement in 1962. During his time as at CU he started the master of personnel services degree program and served as its chairman for 10 years. He also worked as the director of the student counseling service on CU's campus.
Schoolland also found time to publish 3 books on the history in the Boulder area. Schoolland also enjoyed photography and interested in methods of transportation such as railroads, canals, and ferry boats. John B. Schoolland passed away on December 18, 1987 in California.
