John Henry Stek Papers
Scope and Contents
The John Henry Stek Papers include course materials (including syllabi, bibliographies, and lecture notes), correspondence, papers, articles, and sermons. Topics include the bible and biblical studies, theology, the Heidelberg catechism, as well as the institutions of Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary. This collection is notable in that it provides evidence of Stek’s thoughts and teachings on scriptures. It also gives insight into the educational pedagogy of Calvin University and Seminary in the 1950s and 60s, notably on the subject of Genesis and creation versus evolution. The collection also includes articles written by Stek about the New Living Version (NIV) translation of the bible but does not include institutional material on the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) or unpublished notes on its creation.

Biographical or Historical Information
Rev. John Henry Stek was a pastor, bible scholar and translator, and professor of Old Testament Studies at Calvin Theological Seminary. He was born in Iowa in 1925. He graduated from Calvin College with a BA in 1949 and a BD from Calvin Theological Seminary in 1952. Stek entered ministry in the Christian Reformed Church in 1955 and in 1961 was appointed as professor of Old Testament Studies at Calvin Theological Seminary where he served until his retirement in 1991.
Stek was instrumental in the creation and translation of the New International Version (NIV) of the bible which was published in 1978 as well as the Today’s New International Version (TNIV) published in 2003. He was a member of the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) and served as the committee chair from 1990 through the early 2000s.

Abstract
Rev. John Henry Stek (1925 – 2009) was a pastor, bible scholar and translator, and professor of Old Testament Studies at Calvin Theological Seminary who was instrumental in the creation of the New Living Version (NIV) of the bible. This collection contains Stek’s teaching notes on the Old Testament as well as articles, correspondence, and sermons about the bible, catechism, and teaching.
